2020 – 1-1-

Something small chatters in a tree outside the door on New Year’s Day.   Something else whistles ‘whewwwwww’  slowly like it was quietly appreciating someone hot and attractive.

A door closes and the buzz of the refridgerator becomes prominent and though it had begun to inhale and continued indefinitely.   And as if to challenge the last sentence, it stopped.

I inhale and listen to the sound of my wife putting dishes in the machine – closing the door, getting her coffee.  I wonder what the sound of the pot being pulled out of the coffee maker would be like if isolated – what might a Foley artist use it for – maybe some piece of arcane military hardware in a historical drama – La Malevoise perhaps- or some other catapult in a future version of Lord of the Rings.

My gut feels bubbly.   The wind is knocking something against the house.

My scalp itches as I look at a dust bunny on the floor that is near the cord of this computer.   Cords and devices – and I am distracted slightly as I know the dog will soon knock on the door.  I AM WAITING FOR THIS.   He is standing there looking around.   he is a good boy.

the dog licks a bit at the air and looks up at me as he begins to drift.  sleep is his indoor default it seems.   He is old and vital and I hope I will be the same as I begin my later years.

He looks at me every so often to check if there is any change and continues to drift deeper.   The knocking continues as I think of how much more productive I am at home if I have shoes on.   hmm.

On the round kitchen table in front of me are two candle holders that were purchased at the salvation army store.  each has a classic white candle.  the are slightly less than two feet apart and are angles gently across the middle gap of the table.  the candles themselves are leaning slightly and collectively I am reminded of the smokestacks of the Titanic.

An aquamarine box of floss.  Cheap reading glasses.  An envelop that held a Christmas card.  a copy of ‘the dishwasher ‘ bu Stephane LaRue, on top of which is an iPhone.   a square candle that looks like a two-tone blue Rubik’s cube on a glass cheese board shaped like a wine bottle.  an opened Krampus -themed notebook that holds our daily avoirdupois.  A Nsyilcxn language course in a binder.   Four small snack baggies.
